Venture Black Supports Underrepresented Founders
“It is not just teaching a man to fish that will allow him to eat for a lifetime; in the end, it comes down to who owns the pond.” – Dr. John M. Perkins.

Ownership Obstacle
Ownership remains one of the most powerful drivers of wealth creation and long-term community prosperity. Yet Black founders remain significantly underrepresented among leaders of

high-growth companies that generate jobs, investment returns, and transformative economic opportunity. Over the past two decades, the Black in Tech movement has helped build a stronger pipeline of Black innovators and expanded access to knowledge-economy careers. Yet one critical question remains: where are the Black Gen X, Millennial, and Gen Z versions of Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Jensen Huang, Melanie Perkins, Gwynne Shotwell, or Elon Musk? Venture Black has developed a scalable model for cultivating Black founders of high-growth, innovation-driven companies. Founded in 2024, Venture Black receives funding from various sources to strengthen operational capacity, expand its reach, and deepen its influence across Washington State and the Pacific Northwest.
Despite meaningful representation in the nation’s talent pipeline, Black innovators building the next generation of transformative companies remain dramatically undercapitalized. Black professionals represent significant shares of MBA graduates and engineers in the United States, yet Black founders receive less than 1% of venture capital funding nationally. Black investors are similarly underrepresented among those who decide which companies receive capital, accounting for only 1% of angel investors and 3% of venture capital leaders. The result is not a shortage of talent or ambition, but limited access to the relationships, knowledge, capital, and institutional pathways required to build companies at scale. Given that the median wealth of Black households remains approximately one-tenth that of white households, Black knowledge workers face greater barriers to founding high-growth innovation companies and generating the ownership opportunities that drive long-term wealth creation.
Garage Startups to Innovative Breakthroughs
Today’s “garage startups” are increasingly incubated and accelerated through nonprofits, universities, and other institutions funded to support the future of the innovation economy. However, many institutions across Washington State lack deep relationships with Black communities or the resources necessary to ensure Black founders are meaningfully represented among the companies they support. At the same time, many Black-led entrepreneur support organizations provide vital community-based business development services, but often lack access to the venture-scale networks, investor relationships, and specialized expertise required to support founders building high-growth startups.
Venture Black is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that exists to close that gap in the Pacific Northwest. It has successfully built a Black-led institutional bridge between community economic development and the venture ecosystem, helping Black founders build scalable innovation companies while preparing Black and allied investors to evaluate opportunities, deploy capital, and participate in long-term wealth creation. Our work helps ensure that the tools, relationships, and funding pathways used to build globally recognized companies are accessible to the Black community.
Despite operating primarily on a volunteer basis, Venture Black has already demonstrated measurable impact. It has engaged more than 300 founders, supported over 150 pitch opportunities, facilitated more than $211,000 in angel investment through investors participating in its programs, and contributed to more than $7 million raised by companies within its network. Today, Venture Black reaches nearly 1,500 founders, investors, and community partners annually through its programs, events, and ecosystem-building activities.
Angel Investor Accelerator
At the center of this work is its twice-yearly Angel Investor Accelerator, an eight-week cohort program that brings together new and returning accredited Black and ally investors alongside a pitch competition and due-diligence challenge for Black-founded startups. Participants engage in investor education, pitch assessment, mentorship, and collaborative due diligence through a real-world investment process. Each cohort culminates in a pooled investment of $50,000 to $100,000 into one winning company selected from four or five finalists during Demo Day at our first and fourth quarter venture conferences annually. To date, the Accelerator has supported investments into companies including Dopl Technologies, Wink BioTx, Remynt, CAUHEC Connect, and AJA Labs, spanning healthcare, fintech, biotechnology, and consumer products.
Beyond the Accelerator, Venture Black serves as a year-round hub for founders, investors, and ecosystem partners. It convenes quarterly venture conferences, facilitates bi-weekly office hours, hosts monthly workshops, and creates networking opportunities that foster mentorship, relationship building, and access to expertise. Through its podcast and digital content, it further expands access to information and resources for entrepreneurs navigating the venture landscape.
New Growth Phase
Venture Black is now entering a pivotal stage of growth. Its programs have demonstrated demand, its network continues to expand, and its model is producing measurable results with the potential to scale. The opportunity before the organization is to transition from volunteer-powered momentum to durable institutional capacity. Event sponsorship funding would support delivery of its 2026 Angel Investor Accelerator, Q4 Venture Conference Demo Day, ongoing founder and investor programming, and the core organizational capacity required to support a growing regional network.
