You can’t get in shape overnight so take it easy and progress yourself safely. Your body responds better to subtle changes so keep that in mind when increasing weight, running more miles, and trying new stretches.

Dear Akira:

I quit smoking and drinking coffee at the same time many years ago and I did it the same way you did it, by making a firm decision. I realized that every time I drank coffee I smoked a cigarrette, and when I lighted a cigarrette I poured a cup coffee. I think that many bad habits come in pairs, one triggers the other and viceversa. So you have to find the right couple and terminate with both things at the same time.

Being healthy and physically fit is definitively a most for becoming a good entreprenuer as it is for reaching many of your personal goals.

Thank you for your sharing your insights!

Hi Akira, I totally agree. The days where I exercise before work are always the best work days.

Thanks so much for this motivating and practical article, Akira! As usual, your approach is so full of good, solid thinking. You've given me several things to think about as I move to make solid changes to improve my health in and beyond 2010. Wonderful!!

Akira:
Thanks for the great post and congratulations on still being a non-smoker! I used to say that it was easy to quit smoking; the hard part was not starting again!

In addition to being physically and emotionally capable of being a successful entrepreneur, it is also important that you are able to communicate trust. It is critical that your customers, employees, lenders, shareholders and all other stakeholders trust you. You will do this by being committed, professional, detailed and credible.

Akira, this is a great post, and I really appreciate the detailed insight into your personal regime.

Interestingly other successful entrepreneurs feel that their success was due to an all-out focus on work that specifically included putting their health (among other values) on hold until their start-ups reached sustainable levels.

Jason Cohen tells his story here: http://entrepreneur.venturebeat.com/2009/11/23/sacrifice-your-health-for-your-startup. His wife tells hers here: http://blog.asmartbear.com/sacrifice-health-startup.html.

The Cohens were in their 20's when they started their businesses, which makes me wonder if the recipe for success differs for 20-something entrepreneurs and 30-something entrepreneurs.
